Original Paintings

by Katie Jett Walls

I create abstract paintings through an intuitive approach to shape and structure. I work primarily with acrylic paint on wood panel and canvas, and typically create works in series. Within a series, paintings build on elements of the previous, and a cohesive palette and motifs emerge from the process itself.  Through repetition of rounded geometric shapes, and multiple layers of color added and removed throughout the process, my abstractions may evoke places, objects, or structures.

Themes in my work center around relationships between internal and external landscape - a response from within to natural spaces that inspire me.  Engaging with my own internal geology, excavating layers of being, often guides
the creation of my paintings.

My work is strongly influenced by the Color Field painters, particularly Barnett Newman and Anne Truitt, who both returned often to certain forms explored in a variety of palettes, and for whom color was paramount
to the emotional resonance of their work.

My paintings appeal to collectors who love rich color, deeply nuanced surfaces, and a suggestion of landscape while also being open to the viewers own interpretation. Having one of my paintings in your home invites contemplation of your own memories of time in the natural world, your own love of interplay of bold color, and your connection
to the artist’s sensibilities.
