Nature’s White

This winter I worked on a series of paintings exploring elements that occur in nature in shades of white.

Each piece in this series is an abstraction exploring both the limitations and capacity of the color white, as well as the power of natural elements to evoke emotional responses. These responses are coded into our brains from thousands of years interacting with the natural world - even though interactions with the natural world are increasingly lost by our separation from it. These paintings are an invitation to engage with the nature of the color white, and connect to emotions that may come as you contemplate the natural elements that hold this color within themselves.

2024-2025

There was a remarkable thing beside the highway,
a billboard without words. It was a painting, a large
and precise replica of the landscape behind it. On
the picture plane you saw what you would have seen
had it not been there, not the likeness, the reality. I
began to think about it. It was a conversation piece,
a clever hoax, but a hoax nonetheless. It was, if you
will, a sign of the times. How many lifeless things
are placed each day between us and the living earth?
